Heading east out of Flagstaff on Highway 180 towards Winslow Arizona, there are two big arrows, and gas pumps that look like sentinels. Then a few miles later there are Two Guns. Sadly, I guess this pretty much sums up much of the past history of white man and Apaches, Navajo and everybody else who lived here long ago.
A bit further there's a turnoff to Meteor Crater, with a creative round sign.
The Petrified Forest stretches out for square miles. Some of the wood looks as if it fell yesterday.
It doesn't look millions of years old.
An ancient Pueblo remains in the same area. Wupatki has a wonderful instructional walk with self-guiding pamphlets. Today, a school is visiting.
It's almost sunset when we leave the Painted Desert Visitor Center within the Petrified Forest.
Dusk turns to night before we reach Ganado up the 191 on the way to Canyon de Chelly.
The plan was to camp overnight at Spider Rock campground once we got there, but we lucked out- there was space and free camping right near the Visitor Center
The little red firehouse.
A bright and sunny morning after a cool night. Spider Rock is pretty impressive.
