Off to San Francisco
To the Coast & Monterey
The Pacific Coast Highway often has a section or two which narrows down to one lane due to landslides. One idea has been to construct tunnels in some of the problematic sections.
Hans is an avid bicycle guy, as is Linda- they took the opportunity to chat with long distance cyclers near St. Lucia.

Pretty tall Pampas grasses, as Jackie is close to 6'

Hobbit-like in Carmel-by-the-Sea
We enjoyed excellent rooms in this Monterey Best Western. Couldn't be better!

Quiet guest parking right outside the doors.

Jackie and I rented bicycles and went all around Pacific Grove on the pathways, with beach stops along the way.
From Monterey, we had campsites right on the ocean at Half Moon Bay State Park. Sharp-eyed Jackie had been keeping a twice-daily watch for cancellations on the website and we lucked out.

That morning's surf from a different perspective.
Jackie and I had been looking at buying a rugged off-road exploration-type vehicle for desert trails and mountain logging roads. Something that would be good for month long trips around North America. You really need good ground clearance and four wheel drive for these sorts of escapades, and we had narrowed the choices to a VW Westfalia Syncro or a Sportsmobile.

While I love to visit the Monterey Aquarium, I had a chance to visit the Sportsmobile factory in Fresno, so I took a day trip there from the coast to see for myself the methods and results of Ford Econoline E-350 conversions. If you're interested, here's the story of that trip :
